Avoid Notes

Avoid notes, indicated by x's in figure 4.5, are notes that clash against the chord, because they are each a half step away from a chord tone. For example, in C major, the note F (4) is an “avoid note” because it is a half step away from the E (3). In jazz, the exception is in the IImi7 (Dmi7); the Dorian quality that comes from the B natural (major 6) is widely accepted in jazz harmony, even though it is a half step away from the minor 7. Avoid notes can be played, but is suggested that they be treated as passing tones. For example, in the CMa7 chord, you can play the F by playing an ascending line

(E → F → G) or descending line (G → F → E).
